Photo Project 365

This is a photo blog focused on but not limited to study of composition and tonal relations in photographs.

It is a continuation my Project 365 from 2010 a moderately successful attempt to make and publish one photography each day for one year.

The Project lost it's steam somewhere half along the way and this place became a depository of my more satisfying photos.

A year has passed

Last Thursday was 365 days away since my first photograph published on Darkness to Light and Back. I did not manage to keep my discipline and inspiration long enough to call it a success. I wouldn't dare to call it a failure nevertheless.

I was changing a job, I found other time-consuming hobbies, so there were reasons to take the pressure of this one. There always are.

What were my goals? Let's see:

This is for me both a way of motivating myself to take the camera and think about opportunities as well as a chance to start another blog and keep it going after previous have been sadly neglected.

(...) as the name suggests my photos mainly deal with light and shadow: the contrasts, the grays in between and black and white photos. I also prefer working with the natural light than with the strobes as it is easier for me to become charmed by the great quality of natural arrangement of things than to imagine a scene and recreate it with artificial means.
Conclusions:
+   I learned to carry a camera with me all the time.
+   I learned to think about the shot before I take it
+   I grew to appreciate my compact camera and the one in my mobile phone
+   I started a blog which I like and which I will not abandon for some more time
+   I will start another project from the 1st of January

-   I did not learn to keep up the 'photographic eye' state of mind at all times
-   I didn't manage to actively explore the rules of composition through practice
-   I failed to remain motivated by the Project after about 4 months

Tip from Chris Weston

"Something I still do to this day is, before I press the shutter I ask myself the question “How would I caption this image?” If the only answer I can conjure is the species name, then I wait for a better shot."

Comments, please!

I just re-enabled Comments to the posts.

You are welcome to let me know what you think I do right or what I'd better work on some more.

Or you can just let me know that someone just pissed you off and you need to vent it on me and my photos.

Colors

I'm about in a third of the way with my 365 days Project.

I wanted to concentrate on the simplicity and beauty of monochrome photographs. I still do. But I've noticed that most of my recent photos were color.

I hope this is just the thing that Spring does to me with the sudden flood of extra sunlight hours and intensity. In a way its a result of not working out photography ideas but documenting beautiful sights and details.

That's nice but that is not why I started this 4 months ago. I wanted to improve my photography, not share snapshots of my surroundings.

I need to refocus on the original aims and get back to compose photos. Black and white photos which are better for composition and form studies.

D 30 - Misty

Foggy day outside, ill child inside. I'll have to postpone my decision to go out with the camera more.

I noticed that I always use contrast adjustments on my RAW files to increase the output contrast. So I tried to go for something different this time.

Equipment

E-510 with Helios 44-4.

What I learned

This photo was done hand-held with window glass as a support but the ISO had to be high. It comes out that perhaps even more than with high contrast, low contrast photographs must be done with low ISO to minimize the noise.

I was kindly instructed how to upload larger photos to Picasa and then shrink them when embedding in blog. So now you can click the photo to see four times bigger photo in Picasa.

Unable to upload

Sorry!

It was a busy day and I just came to the computer but I recalled that the camera battery stayed in the room where my son is sleeping. I will not risk waking him up to put a photo on this blog.

So for now take my word for it - I did some photos today and I will put load them up tomorrow.

But to fill the post with something here goes one of the photos I grew to like after editing it in Picasa.

Od Jesień 2009

It was crooked and unfocused but with some histogram and white balance changes it really came up nice.
